Milkweed Editions are independent book publishers based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Founded in 1980, they are leading nonprofit literary publishers giving a voice to exceptional authors writing outstanding literature.
The press publishes 15 to 20 titles each year, and have some three hundred titles in print, with nearly four million books in circulation. They have received hundreds of publishing awards and designations of national significance.
Genres Of Interest: Milkweed Editions
Novels, novellas, and short story collections. No genre fiction; crime, mystery,romance, science fiction, or westerns.
- Literary Non Fiction:
Titles focusing on the relationships between human and natural communities. No academic, business, or scientific material, or literary biographies.
Single author collections only. 60 pages minimum. No inspirational poetry.
- Young Readers:
Middle grade and young adult novel length fiction between 90 and 200 pages. No picture books or poetry collections.
Milkweed Editions is accepting submissions from all authors whether they have been published before or not. Familiarize yourself with their list to ensure work might be a suitable fit before making an approach. Submissions are preferred through their online manager which is only open during reading periods.
A query letter is required in all instances. In addition for fiction and literary non fiction send the three opening chapters or three representative short stories/essays. Poetry; submit the entire collection. Young readers; submit the first three chapters of the novel. Maximum file size in all cases is 150 KB.

No previously self published work. Will reply to status update requests. All work is given careful consideration. Milkweed Editions receives around three thousand manuscripts each year. The selection process is rigorous, and they choose just a handful of titles annually for publication.
